The Independence Day

Image
What was our country Like 61 years ago? How far have we gone now? A lot has happened since 1st October 1960. Our founding fathers, who are no more, have fought for this liberation. Nigerians were excited then. You can't imagine the happy look on their faces! It was our first taste of freedom! We believe things will get better now that we are in charge. We were so filled with hope. The unity that binds us then was ever strong. Today is 1st October 2021, The celebratory moment that we had during our first independence day is more intense than now. If you go down to the streets, there is no sign of celebration except that all offices are closed. People still go about their business. Nigerians today are hoping that things will get better. They are looking forward to the prospect of a better government in 2023. The experiences they had over the past years were intense but they never lose hope. Hope will still keep Nigerians moving. They are resilient, hardworking, determined, ambitiou...

Why we fear change?

Image
People fear what they didn't understand. Especially when it involves change. Talk of Galileo who was imprisoned and charged  for heresy by the catholic church in Rome because he published his findings that the earth and other planets revolved around the sun and not the common belief of earth-centered universe. Talk of the Civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King, who fought for equality against racism and segregation In America.   Talk of Gandhi who fought against the British rule, pressuring them to liberate his country India in a non-violent way.                         Talk of Jesus who was killed because he claims to be the son of God, spreading the message of salvation, performing miracles and wonders, and teaching people people how to live a holy life. And yet the same people are too blind to see because they didn't understand. People fear change, they fear the outcome could be damaging, they ...

Beth and the old man in a wheelchair

Image
The story starts out where she, Beth, is sitting at an airport terminal, waiting to board a plane. She was sitting there with several other people who were also waiting, whom she did not know. As she waited, she pulled out her Bible and started reading. All of a sudden she felt as if the people sitting there around her, were looking at her. She looked up, but realized that they were looking just over her head, in the direction right behind her. She turned around to see what everyone was looking at, and when she did, she saw a stewardess pushing a wheelchair, with the ugliest old man sitting in it, that she had ever seen before. She said he had this long white hair that was all tangled and such a mess. His face was really, really wrinkled, and he didn't look friendly at all. She said she didn't know why, but she felt drawn to the man, and thought at first that God wanted her to witness to him. In her mind she said she was thinking, "Oh, God, please, not now, not here....

The Dilemma of two women

Image
One woman was caught stealing food because she wants to feed her hungry child.  Another woman was caught stealing her friends purse because she saw an earring she liked. Going by the context of the two incidents, people would rather justify the actions of the first woman and condemn the second woman right?   But if I were to ask you are they all thieves? What would be your answer? If it was you that caught that woman stealing your food or your bag of grains, will you condemn her? Of course, you will! But why? Because the question of "why" never comes first only anger, hate, and an urge to hurt that person. This is how the world works, the question of "why you did it?" never comes first. What comes first are curses, ridicule, beatings, anger, hate, and revenge.  Always remember that people will judge you before they hear your story and what will be at stake is your reputation, respect, trust, and integrity. My advice, be cautious of your actions.

Possible reasons Why US police are killing unarmed African Americans

Image
On Wednesday the 25th of May 2020, George Floyd, a tall 46-year-old African American, walked into Cup Foods, a grocery store at the intersection of East 38th street & Chicago avenue in the Powderhorn Park neighbourhood of Minneapolis. Later that evening, Floyd was seen laying down on his chest with his cheek to the ground, saying, " I can't breathe " precisely 16 times while officer Chauvin's knee was placed firmly on his neck. We all know the aftermath of that incident and the emotional uproar it instigated. This was not the first incident of a US cop killing an unarmed black man. Others before him were the 50-year-old Walter Scott, 18-year-old Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and many others. So, the question is Why are US cops killing unarmed African Americans? 1. Could it be racism? Many Americans without any doubt believed that police brutality unfairly targets black people and that the American justice system criminalizes African Americans. Black people are three...

How The BBC WorldService Improved my vocabulary

Image
I have listened to the BBC WorldService for like six years now, and it was kind of bizarre for someone of my age group to be obsessed with radio when smartphones exist but this is how it all started. In the year 2014, my family relocated to Numan, a town near the state capital called Yola located in Adamawa State, Nigeria. We relocated there temporarily in the month of  November 2014 because Bokoharam insurgents infiltrated our home town and left us with no choice than to run away. My coming there feels kind of uncomfortable but I was ready to adapt, knowing that it wasn't permanent.

Nature's Incentive

Image
Have you ever had a bite of any fruit and you enjoyed the taste so much? Have you ever wondered why flowers smell so good or why they look so beautiful? From the beginning of time or origin of our world, nature incentives had been in existence. What do I mean by nature incentives? The dictionary defines incentive as something that motivates, rouses, or encourages. It can also be referred to as a bonus or reward. So what aspect of nature motivates or rewards us for doing something? In this context that aspect of nature is reproduction. But why reproduction? If we take a look at plants and trees and how they produce seeds from the flowering stage to the fruiting stage, we'll find out that a hierarchy of process is involved but where does the incentive come in? Plants and Trees are fixated living things. They don't have the capability of mobility like animals and insects do. Therefore to have their offsprings distributed across the earth, they prod...

Is the world getting worse?

Image
Every day we are bombarded with News on catastrophes happening around the world from hurricanes to earthquakes, wildfires to landslides, bomb blast to war crimes, poverty, violence and the threats of global warming. We then began to ask questions on what's happening? We became inquisitive towards the cause of all these problems. Some say it is the end of the world, others say it is because of the increase in the world's population and the overuse of the earth's resources. People keep on making speculations because they are looking for what to blame these problems on but what's the cause? Amidst all these,  can we still say the world is much better now compared to the previous centuries? Sometimes we become overwhelmed by the bad things happening around us that we became lost and fail to recognize some of the good things occurring.  Did you know that in the last two decades, the percentage of the world living in extreme poverty has reduced to half the o...

Your Mental Image

Image
Imagine yourself in a room full of smelly feces with all your feet stuck inside and some of it splashed to your face. Feels disgusting right? You might have squeezed your face while imagining that but it's not like you are there. So why do you squeeze your face? Is it because you know how repugnant the smell of feces is? No The truth is you squeezed your face because of your mental image. That kind of situation only exists in your mind and picturing it will have the same effect on your face as it will in reality.

My greatest fear

Image
Johnny wake up! Something is moving in the room!! It’s dark in here, can you please turn the light on. I can't! The power went off! What’s that sound? Oh my God. According to Wikipedia Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger. It is also a strong emotion induced by anticipated danger. Fear is normal and it’s like a shield designed to protect us humans from perceived danger. It’s often directed towards a situation or objects that don’t necessarily pose a real danger. Phobia is often termed as an irrational fear towards a situation, living creature, object, etc. It’s being termed as' irrational' because people find it unreasonable. Take for example xanthophobia, the fear of yellow colour. People with xanthophobia fear anything yellow including the Sun. Others include coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, turophobia, the fear of Cheese and so on. Sometimes these fears are seen as anxiety disorders. Nevertheless that’s just an introduction. I know we all have our fe...

MARVELOUS LOVE

Image
On a cold  christmas eve in 1952, when korea was in the middle of a civil war, one young woman struggled along a village street, because she was pregnant and about to deliver a child. She pleaded with passerby's."help me ! Please. My baby"   no one paid attention to her. A middle-aged couple walked by and one of them pushed her away and mocked her saying "where is the father ? " the couple laughed and went on. The woman almost doubled up from a contraction as she watched them go. "please.." she begged. She heard of a missionary living nearby who might help her. Quickly she began walking to that village, hoping the man will help her and the baby. Shivering and in pain she struggled over the frozen countryside. But the night was so cold . Snow began to fall. Realizing that the time was near to deliver her baby, she took shelter under a bridge. There alone her baby was born on christmas eve. Worried about her new born son, she took off her own ...

Is there a future for him?

Image
Is there a future for him? While helping my parents today on a farm in a remote bush, something struck my mind. I saw this young fulani boy passing by with some herds of cattle as they seek harvested farms for their animals to feed on. It's the season the nomadics usually show up. In this period of time, farmers here in northern Nigeria are busy harvesting their farm produce, which consist of maize, groundnut, cowpea etc. And when they are done the fulani's will usually let their cattles to feed on the remains, while sometimes they will deliberately allow their animals into the farms that are yet to be harvested which eventually leads to conflict and sometimes even death. So when i saw this young fulani fellow, moving with a small white water container hung by his side while his hands were resting on a stick placed around his shoulders in the herdsman style, i began to wonder what his dreams are? And i  imagined if he even have dreams. For sure he is not edu...

I can't do it anymore

Image
Hope gives us the reason to proceed, faith gives us the assurance of attaining the goal, patience gives us the comfort that waiting for it is worth it and endurance gives us the strength to overcome the difficult moments. Whatever it is you are currently facing in this life, no matter how difficult it is, You have what it takes to overcome. And all you have to do is never to give up on yourself. Because many thought that they have tried everything possible but it is not working, yes it might not work but that does not mean you shouldn't keep trying. Always believe that things will work out above all odds, clear the tears, fill your heart with hope, do away with the worries because it will only rob you of your joy. For you've got everything within you to succeed, you just need to learn how to use it.

A woman

Image
The world calls her with different names , admires her beauty and respects her soft spoken spirit. A nation cannot do without her because she is the nation , a transformer of every generation and an integral part of the society. She is also a mother to billions , millions and thousands of people who look up to her for support and care because of her caring and loving nature. Deep within her lies  a bowl of empathy and desire to help her dear ones even if it means sacrificing her happiness for theirs. And her shoulder has always been  a tears absorbing floor for many to cry on . She is very strong but the world thought she is weak and fragile because she doesn't fight with her hands , but instead with her heart. Instigating a war is what she will not do,  but during wars and conflict's , she has always been the reason for hope and happiness to the heart of many and that makes her a symbol of peace and unity. With her contagious smile,  she makes others...

Is this death?

Image
What is death?  Who is death? Does he has a personality?  Who is he?  Why does he makes us sad or cry? In fact why do we even fear it?  The story of this young man said it all. John was a gregarious type of guy, a tall , handsome looking young man about 5ft tall. He lives in a neighbourhood  near the city drive post office where he was loved by almost all. Every Saturday in the morning old Mrs Johnson  always hears the soft , gentle voice of a man  in joggers  and a sweaty T-shirt , trotting energetically pass her house as she waters her Roses . "Good morning , Mrs Johnson , i love your Roses!". With her old  wrinkled dimple smile, Mrs Johnson always replied "Thank you! Dear". That was John. He works as a clerk in his place of work at BB-enterprise in town, And he is fond of cracking jokes with his colleagues during break hours. Even though he dislikes reading fairy tales from his childhood, he never forgets to read one of the...

The thinking faculty

Image
The thinking faculty is amazing, Its wonderful and magnificent. I imagined it as a multipurpose Virtual machine  of creativity , which means every person i see is like a company having this powerful machine that produces amazing things. This person who is now a company , has a brand name for the items  produced by this virtual machine(thinking faculty) ,  generated arbitrarily by the behaviour based on character of the person ,  who leaves his trade mark on the items produced,  generated by his attitude. But it seems like most people under estimate the potency of this faculty even though we make use of it everyday. This calls for something new or an upgrade which means We have to take a little step further, to go beyond the little things we do with this powerful machine which means we need to give in more data, information, knowledge etc.  to this machine in order to make best use of it. Because thats the raw materials this faculty needs and when its ...

The Christmas harmattan

Image
Waking up early in the morning today reminds me of a remarkable story. Today the harmattan weather was a bit tense with dust , accompanied by a no where to hide cold. Even though one was covered with a blanket, this cold makes one feel as if the blanket was perforated. So i remember it was christmas. Long ago a child was born in a cold stable and he was placed in nothing but a manger. He is the prince of peace, an epitome of humbleness and a light to our dark hearts. This cold reminds me of the condition he was born in just to save you and me and today we celebrate his birth . MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The Baby boy in a manger

Image
A boy was born in a stable , placed in a manger in the little town of bethlehem. His birth was unique non like any other. But what is so special about this birth? You can't believe it, its the birth of the  heir of the  kingdom of God. A king in the making, an exalted prince!. But why would he come into this world in a conventional way? The only answer is love and humbleness. He took it upon himself to come into this world in a mortal form to help our helpless soul for the sake of his unconditional love for us! . We celebrate his birth, that is christmas!!

The heart of Joseph the Capenter

Image
Joseph is what they call you, a righteous man and the prominent carpenter of the town of Nazareth. You are known to be very dilligent and skilled in your work, no wonder you have lot of apprentice! . You love and respect people and the people respect you. When you discover your betrothed was pregnant, you refused to expose her to public disgrace even though you thought she was unfaithful. You have a big heart, no wonder God choose your generation to usher our king into this world!
