Is the world getting worse?
Every day we are bombarded with News on catastrophes happening around the world from hurricanes to earthquakes, wildfires to landslides, bomb blast to war crimes, poverty, violence and the threats of global warming.
We then began to ask questions on what's happening? We became inquisitive towards the cause of all these problems. Some say it is the end of the world, others say it is because of the increase in the world's population and the overuse of the earth's resources. People keep on making speculations because they are looking for what to blame these problems on but what's the cause?
Amidst all these, can we still say the world is much better now compared to the previous centuries? Sometimes we become overwhelmed by the bad things happening around us that we became lost and fail to recognize some of the good things occurring.
Did you know that in the last two decades, the percentage of the world living in extreme poverty has reduced to half the original size?
Did you know that there are more girls in school now than before? Did you know that almost all the world have access to electricity? Some of these facts may surprise you but its the truth. There is more to these facts and in real sense, life in the world is getting more better than before.
More people now have access to health care facilities and child mortality rates have reduced.
We all have this illusion that the world is getting worse every day and it's not our fault because we have been digesting a lot from the media.
The emotion we get from all the stories we heard of, has made us generate a general perspective on the condition of the world. We also judge based on past Knowledge. you can't use the 80's to judge the 90's. We need to update that knowledge and throw away the misconceptions we have about our world's current state.
I will recommend you to read the book "Factfullness" by Hans Rosling. It will help you to understand many aspects of the world you thought you knew but is wrong.
