Threat Of An Oblivion Consignment
In the past, people lived a simple life in Africa that comprises of different cultures, tradition and ethics that are antiquated to the lifestyle of the Africans today.
Each African country comprises of different ethnic group with numerous culture. It is quite unfortunate that many of these long inherited cultures are fading into thin air, especially in my country Nigeria due to negligence. The widespread complacency towards this fading heritage fuels the surging lack of interest in learning what is called our ethnic language especially among the youths and growing children.
Every moment, it seems as if we see the western language and its culture as the ideal music to interact with the world of which importance is attached to, marginalising our own heritage. We are being taught at school, to learn how to speak the western language as well as how to read and write but no one cares if we don't know how to speak our mother tongue as long as we can speak the western language well enough. It seems like the emphasis is on learning the foreign language forsaking ours to the threat of an oblivion consignment.
What kind of awareness is needed to spark the desire of embracing our ethnic code? Should this be the start of introducing every ethnic language into the school curriculum? If this will prevent posterity from forgetting their cultural heritage, this should be noted as a welcomed development to be implemented.
